Japanese Interest In Wii Up, PS3 Down

advertisement

The country's Computer Entertainment Software Association polled consumer interest in game machines. What did they find? Interest in the Wii shot up from 20.9 percent this time last year to 48.9 percent. The PS3 dropped from 64.4 percent interest down to 57 percent.

Don't even ask what they think of the XBox 360.

With the Japanese PS3 launch just behind us and the Wii launch in just a few short days, this bodes well for Nintendo's goal to sell out in all regions.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

There's more interest in a system that hasn't released than a system that has? Who would have thought??

Your criticism doesn't really make sense, Pharaoh. This isn't comparing the Wii to the PS3 directly; it's comparing interest in both systems, currently, to the same measured interest in systems from last year. The PS3 still has more interest than the Wii (57% to 49%), but compared to this time period last year, the Wii interest has risen while the PS3's interest has fallen. The fact that the PS3 has already been released isn't really a factor in the statistics, because the point of the study is measurement against the same interest a year ago, not a direct system-to-system comparison.

Yes, but interest will obviously decrease after the system launches and interest will be at its highest in the week before a system launches. It would be like me giving you a steak and then asking if you're interested in another steak or some dessert.

Without knowing precisely when the questions were asked, that point is moot. Your argument hinges on the entire poll taking place in the last week or so, which you have no evidence of. We're hearing about the results now, but that doesn't mean the Japanese CESA waited until just after the PS3 launch, then rushed out to ask questions.

Plus, I should again note, this is comparing statistics from last year. If they had taken the same poll just before the PS3 launch, then right after, what you're saying would make perfect sense. But is it so hard to believe that interest in the PS3 has dropped 7 points over the course of a year, especially with Sony making so many PR missteps in that time period?

The sharp increase in Wii interest isn't that surprising either, considering that this time last year we knew very little about the system itself. We had seen its crazy controller, but there wasn't anything shown in the way of application, so of course people weren't as interested.

Which ever system decides to offer the most animated porn will win the heart of the Japanese consumers. Animated porn in blueray or hddvd that is the question.
