Ben takes drastic steps to do as the Island wishes, as the Losties put themselves in harm's way for the sake of getting everyone to safety.

ABC Preview:

The face-off between the survivors and the freighter people begins.

Note: "Lost in the Vines" is made for discussion of the series "Lost" on ABC. As such, here be spoilers! We talk frankly about the events of the night, speculate about future events, and so on. Read no further if you don't want spoilers.

Flash-forward: The Oceanic Six

The Big Reveal: Jack now knows that Claire is his sister; Ben surrendered himself to the mercenaries to allow Locke entrance to the Orchid station.

Summary

(Flash-forwards are in Italicized text. Commercial breaks are noted.)

A plane is piloted by two men, one of whom handles a lucky rabbit's foot, fearing the cargo they carry as bad luck. The pilot turns around to Karen Decker and tells her to let them know the plane is coming in. She agrees and walks back, talking to the Oceanic Six, telling them they're going to a military facility near Honolulu. She says their families are already there. She also tells them there are reporters but as far as Oceanic is concerned they don't have to talk to any reporters. Jack says they'll talk to them, and she asks if it's alright. He says they all agreed. The woman tells them they're calling them the Oceanic Six. She leaves.

Jack reminds everyone that they all know the story, and if they get any questions that they don't know the answer to or can't answer to just say nothing. He says they'll just think they're in shock, and Sun says that they are in shock. He says well, then, it should be easy. The plane lands at the air strip and the passengers take off their belts. The cargo bay door opens to reveal a crowd of people. One by one the six get up and walk out to applause and happy famlies. Hurley hugs his mother, Sun sees her parents and hugs her mother too. Jack hugs his mom. Kate and Sayid stand alone, but Hurley grabs Sayid to introduce him to the family.

Rose asks why Sayid and Desmond dropped the thing above them. Jack says that wherever they are they want them to know. Sun asks if they can just call, and Jack hands the phone to Daniel telling him not to try anything stupid. Daniel overhears the voices on the phone from the mercs talking about the Orchid. Jack asks Juliet what the Orchid is and she doesn't know, but she also points out she didn't hear Desmond or Sayid. Jack calls Kate over to go out for them with him. Juliet chases after him saying he just had surgery. Jack insists, saying he promised these people he'd get them off the island. Juliet sarcastically tells him not to bleed to death, and he tells her goodbye.

Daniel digs through his bag and Charlotte asks what's wrong. He says if they're going to the Orchid they're using the secondary protocol. Charlotte asks what he means, and he looks through a notebook with a sketch of the Orchid logo. He says, they have to get off this island right now.

-------------

Jack checks the phone and observes that they're catching up, and Kate recommends taking a break. They stop and drink some water, and Kate notices Jack is bleeding from his stitches. Jack says it's just discharge from an infection. Kate says when most people are lying they can't look you in the eye but Jack does the opposite. They hear a noise in the woods and draw their guns, and Miles walks out. They hear a baby's cry and see Sawyer with Aaron.

Jack and Kate look shocked and ask where Claire is, and Sawyer says they lost her. He explains that she walked off in the middle of the night. He says he was hoping that she went back to the beach, but Jack tells him she didn't. Sawyer asks what they're doing and Jack explains about the phone and that it's from Sayid. Sawyer says he better hope it's not Sayid because if he's with the mercenaries they don't want to mess with him. Kate asks if they tried to kill him and Sawyer tells her, yes, just like Locke said they would. Jack asks if they should run and the two argue until Aaron cries. Kate picks up the baby and Jack says he put Sayid and Desmond on the chopper, so it's his responsibility to find them. Kate chases after him and says he can't go by himself. Jack walks off and tells Kate to just carry the baby. Sawyer walks after him to help the search.

At a press conference, Decker says the crash site was off the islands of Indonesia and carried onto a small island. She explains that on day 103 a typhoon washed up a fishing boat with basic supplies and a survival raft. On day 108 the remaining survivors, including Ms. Austin's baby that she gave birth to on the Island, used the raft to get to Sumba. Then the local fishermen found them and once their identities were discovered they were transported to Hawaii. She says they've been through a great deal but have agreed to some questions.

A reporter asks how they survived when the plane hit the ocean. Jack says it happened fast, and he remembers the plane filling with water, but a group of them got the the emergency door. The reporter asks if they swam to the island. Jack answers that they had cushions and life jackets for a day but by then there were only 8 of them left. Another reporter says they look healthy for people who were on an island that long. Hurley jokes about how he looks and the reporter confronts him about his money. He says he doesn't want it back. Another reporter asks Sun something in Korean and Sun translates that she asked if her husband died on the island. Sun says no, he never made if off the plane. A reporter asks about Kate's baby, pressing that she would have been 6 months pregnant when she was apprehended. The press agent says her legal background is off the table. A reporter asks if there are any other survivors and Sayid says no, absolutely not.

The survivors walk out and the press agent stops Sayid saying there's a woman for him who wasn't listed as a family member. Sayid walks out to see Nadia. They kiss tearfully.

Sayid sails on his raft to the beach and Sun asks where Desmond is. Sayid says he's on the freighter. He says they have to take people on the raft back to the freigher. Juliet asks why and he says, because the people on the helicopter have every intention of killing them all. Juliet looks shocked and reveals that Jack and Kate went after it.

-------------

Ben tells Hurley that they're going to the Orchid. Hurley asks why and Ben says to move the island, joking that it needs to be done very carefully. Hurley says if they can move the island anytime, why didn't they move it before? Ben says that it's dangerous and unpredictable, a last resort. They open a box and find a variety of items, digging through them until Ben finds a mirror. He holds it up to the light and Hurley asks what he's doing. Ben says he's communicating. Locke asks with who and Ben shoots back, who do you think? There are flashes coming back from the hillside and Ben says now they can go. Locke asks what he told them and Ben says it's none of his business.

Daniel tells Sayid that they need to get people off the island. He offers to ferry people off while Sayid goes to look for Jack and Kate. Sayid hands Daniel the compass and says he trusts he knows the bearing. Juliet says that Sun is pregnant so she should go first. Kate finds Sayid and asks what he's doing. Sayid says he needs to go after Jack and Kate explains where he is. Kate offers to go with him and Sayid agrees, Kate hands Aaron to Sun while she runs into the jungle with Sayid. Daniel waves goodbye to Charlotte as some survivors, including Sun and Jin, board the raft and sail out to sea. Jin tells Sun, he told her he'd get her off the island.

Sun walks to her father's office, as he argues about a bank deal. The two men he's arguing with leave and Sun greets her father, saying she hopes she's not interrupting. He says there's complications with the company that she wouldn't understand. He asks about her pregnancy and she tells him not to pretend he's interested, they both know he hated her husband. He gets angry and tells her that she should respect him as her father. Sun tells him that Oceanic paid a significant amount for the crash, and this morning she paid for a controlling interest in the company, so now he should respect her. She yells at her father saying it's his fault that Jin was on the plane. He's responsible for his death. Sun tells him she's going to have her baby and then they'll talk about what to do with their company.

-------------

A car pulls up and Hurley walks out with a big bag of chicken in hand. He notices the door cracked open and calls for his mom and dad. He kicks a coconut as he walks through the hall, and then hears whispers. He grabs a Jesus statue as a weapon and opens the door to find his family giving a surprise party with a tropical theme. His mom asks what he's doing and he says he thought there might be a prowler, and she says Jesus is not a weapon.

At the party, Kate wishes him a happy birthday and he greets Aaron. Sayid and Nadia come to say hello and tell him it was an interesting choice of theme. Hurley jokes that mom and dad don't get it. Hurley's father pulls him aside to give him a gift.

Hurley tells his father he didn't want anything from the money. His father tells him to relax, he got it before they got the money. The door opens to reveal the car they had worked on together, and his father explains that after the crash he was making it as a memorial to remember his son, but now he's back and it's his. He hands him the keys. Hurley goes to start the car and notices the numbers in the odometer: 4 8 15 16 23 42. He yells at his dad as if it's a joke and his father says it's a big coincidence. Hurley says he doesn't want anything to do with it. He runs out into the street as his father calls after him.

Hurley asks Ben, if the orchid does what he says, if it works and they move the island, wouldn't that mean the guys with guns move too? Ben says yes, and he's working on that. Hurley yells that he still wants to get off the island. Locke says it's a little late for that. Ben asks for the binoculars and tells them to get down lower to the ground, because they're at the Orchid. Ben looks through the binocs and Locke asks what they're waiting for. Ben says they're waiting because WIdmore knows about this place and knows what they want inside. Locke says he thought he said he doesn't know anything about the island and Ben says he wasn't being entirely truthful. He hands Locke the binocs and tells him to watch the plants, and Locke notices men in camouflage. He says, they're already here.

-------------

The raft boards the freighter. Desmond asks where Sayid is and Daniel explains that he had to go back for Jack. On board, Sun and Jin notice Michael, staring at him. Desmond rushes back to tell the (new) captain that the engines should be working now. He turns them on and they are. The captain starts up the engines and Desmond says it has to be bearing 305 to get on the Island. The captain says something on the ship is broadcasting so the radar isn't working, and Desmond goes to find what it is.

Sawyer asks if Jack cut himself shaving and he explains that Juliet took out his appendix. They find the helicopter and hide behind some rocks. Jack calls for Frank and Frank explains that he dropped the phone so they could find him and he could get them out of here. Frank tells Sawyer to get the toolbox and explains that the mercenaries are coming and the freighter is the best place to be. He says the mercenaries are at the Orchid waiting to snatch Ben Linus. Sawyer asks what they're going to do with the people with Ben Frank says, nothing good. Sawyer tells Jack that Hugo's with them.

Jack gives a eulogy to Christian Shepherd, joking that his father thought the only good thing about a wake was the free booze. He says that what he's going to say is not for his father, it's for him. He says goodbye to his father, that he loved him and he misses him. Jack shakes hands at the exit line and hugs his mother and they agree to see each other at home. Kate compliments Jack on his eulogy and he says he had a lot of practice.

A woman comes up to Jack and tells him, with an Australian accent, that she's very sorry for his loss. Jack asks how she knew his father and she says that she's the reason he was in Australia. The woman explains that she was in the hospital, but he came to see his daughter, her daughter. Jack says his father didn't have a daughter and the woman tells him to check his father's phone records. She says, the strangest thing is that her daughter was on her plane too, flight 815. She says that Jack was in the plane with her and probably never even knew she was his sister. She says she was one of the ones who died when the plane hit the water, and her name was Claire. Jack stumbles as if punched in the gut, and the woman says she didn't mean to burden him but he needed to know. She says she's sorry for his loss. As she walks out, she compliments Aaron.

-------------

Sun asks how Michael got back to New York and he explains that they took Ben's boat and found an island and hopped a cargo ferry. He says he didn't tell anyone who they were. Sun asks if he's working for Ben. Michael lashes out saying he doesn't work for Ben, he's trying to make up for what he did. Michael asks Sun to translate and Jin says in English that he understands. Desmond comes and yells that he needs Michael. They walk into the engine room to find it full of C4 explosives. Jin says something to Sun in Korean and then "now" in English and she rushes out.

Kate and Sayid follow some tracks and Kate says these ones aren't Jack or Sawyer and they're fresh, and they're doubling back behind them. Sayid yells at whoever it is to come out now. Richard Alpert walks out with his hands raised. Kate yells at him to stop, then Sayid does too, and suddenly the two are surrounded by Others with guns. Richards says, he told them to drop their guns, and the two surrender them.

Locke says he sees two of the mercs but not the one that killed Alex. Ben says he's there. Ben tells Locke that he needs to go into the greenhouse through the hole, then gives him directions to an elevator that leads to the actual Orchid station. Locke asks what he's going to do about the armed men, and Ben says he'll take care of them. Locke asks how he's going to do that and Ben says, how many times will he have to tell him? He always has a plan. He walks out towards the mercs as Locke calls after him.

Sun walks out onto the deck of the ship with Aaron, looking back at the doorway. Jack and Sawyer set out to find Hurley. Sayid and Kate are led through the jungle by Richard Alpert. Locke and Hurley watch Ben with his hands raised, walking towards the Orchid. A gun cocks and Ben is surrounded by mercenaries, including Keamy. Ben identifies himself and says he believes they're looking for him. Keamy holds a gun to Ben's head and pistol whips him.

Yep, there's another week down. In two weeks we'll have the two-hour season finale, complete with a serious case of carpal tunnel from yours truly. The double-wide episodes are always killer for these things, but I do it because I love! Also, because there's many people that would throw bricks at my house if I didn't.

Also, this is the FINAL question for the Lost in the Vines Prediction Contest! 108 in all, grading all of these to find the winner is going to be a much more arduous process than even the season finale. I've got enough to keep me busy for a while, folks. The questions have been updated as usual, so go check if you found answers I didn't. After the finale, all the questions will be answered, because that's when we'll know whether or not they were addressed.

I rated this one Pretty Good. It was nothing mind-blowing, but you could tell they're going a specific direction here. It's leading up to the finale, so I can't fault it for not having a lot of huge mind-blowing parts on its own. It was more setup than satisfaction. But! I would like to point out that I did a LitV Special Edition about the Orchid over the summer that might be interesting to look back at now. It basically implies time-space travel, which we know about now, but nifty anyway.

I don't really have any Jeers, because my only Jeer is just that it wasn't mind-blowing. Nothing about it struck me as really awful either. So here's some Cheers:

Cheers

  • Sun: "Now you respect me." (Oh snap!)
  • Mrs. Hurley: "Jesus Christ is not a weapon." I lol'd.
  • Richard Alpert is the man. He's not Desmond, but he's always cool and in control, fun to see.
  • Ben: "I always have a plan."

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

Well, we know the Orchid can alter space/time, and messing haphazardly with that does seem like it might kind of cause issues. I'm guessing that they can "move" the Island, but the where and when aren't particularly well-targeted. It may be a last resort simply because they don't have much control over the destination.

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

Since they have an Oceanic "handler," it seems a lot like the company themselves did. But that would mean that the company wants to hide the Island, which then again brings up the question of who they're in league with.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

My not-wild-at-all speculation is that he was talking to Richard and his Othermmandos, telling them to meet him at the Orchid so when Keamy thinks he has Ben right where he wants him, the Others can take them all out. Leaving Keamy for Ben to take out personally, of course.

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

This is a strange one. Hurley's dad saw them too, so it wasn't just him being crazy. But I thought he shook the curse while he was on the Island. So maybe leaving the Island reinstated the curse, even though he's steering clear of the money?

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

Given Ben and Widmore's conversation, I'd say they know equal amounts. In other words, quite a bit.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

Keamy, before he left? Because... he's an idiot? I've got no idea, actually.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

I doubt it, but I had to throw this question in there for funsies. She was unconscious when Claire got pregnant, so it's not like she really knows... but hey, grandmother's intuition or something, you never know.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?
What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

Going along with my earlier speculation, I think they were just on their way to the Orchid to play their role as Deus Ex Machina when they ran into Kate and Sayid and figured, hey, let's bring these guys along.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

I'll chalk this up to the need for uncertainty in a season finale. We already know who the Six are, so they had to do something to create tension, and wondering how all these spread out people will get together is helping that a bit.

I've got a question... What's jamming the boat's sonar? Is it that "bomb" Michael activated? I really, really, really hope that thing had a purpose other than just to @!$%# with Michael.

I think the "bomb" michael turned on was just to mess with Michael. The RF signal that is messing with the boat is probably the signal between the C4 and the remote on Keamy's arm.

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

It can move the Island, I would say it can destroy the Island

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

          My guess is Oceanic

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

The Others - probably telling them something to the effect of attack the Orchid station

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

Cause the Island isn't done with him. Probably ties in to the Jack's Heaven talk.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exacly how much do they know?

Widmore told them. As much as he felt they needed to know.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

Keamy as part of the secondary protocol. Which be why he killed the captain. My guess is that the thing strapped to his arm is a tracking device to get him and Ben off the island

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

          Unknown, maybe.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

          To the Orchid.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

Distraction. Probably going to kill them.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

My guess is that Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid escape in the helicopter and somehow use Keamy's rescue transport. They pick up Sun and Aaron who are the only apparent survivors when the ship blows up.

Overall this was an okay episode. I won't call it a filler episode since technically it hour 1 of the 3 hour finale. It does suffer from middle book/movie syndrome. Middle book/movie syndrome is basically what you get when you do a trilogy for series that was initially conceived as one volume. Its entire purpose is to move the characters into position for the Ultimate Showdown for Ultimate Destiny*. I think when seen in context with the final two hours it will be regarded better.

So, here is where I think things are going. Keamy is carrying out the secondary protocol. The secondary protocol is to destroy the island, everyone on it, and blow up the boat (which is why he killed the captain, he knew he was dead anyway). His mission is to still capture Ben (which is why he didn't kill him) and he thinks he has a secret way to get off the island and to be rescued. He thinks the device on his arm is some kind of tracking locater device so Widmore can find him. In reality I think it plays into the destruction of the Island. Somehow, Ben will stop him with the help of Richard and the Commandos. While that is going on Locke is going to continue his mission to move the Island. Jack and Sawyer are going to rescue Kate and Sayid and escape on the helicopter with Hurley. Sawyer is going to choose not to get on the helicopter - don't know why. While trying to make their escape the helicopter will be damaged and they will crash next to Sun and Aaron who are in a life raft as the only apparent survivors after the boat blows up. At this point I think there are two possibilities:

          A) At some point in the chaos they get Keamy's locater device (if it really is a locater device) and they are rescued by the group coming for him.

          B) The more likely scenario that I'm leaning towards (now) is that they end up on the Island mentioned in their story after watching the Island disappear/appear to blow up/do something spectacular.

John will succeed in moving the Island. By the end of the episode I think most of our main characters not part of the O6 will appear to be dead but that Jin will be the only one who actually is (as much as anyone is dead on this show).

Next season is going to focus on Jack and the O6 seeking a way back to the Island (something will cause them to all want to). It will end with them finding a way back (I think Sayid somehow forces Ben to give them a way back). I'm not sure what the people left on the Island will be doing. Becoming Others or something. The final season all will be revealed as the final battle for the island between Ben and Widmore takes place.

So that is my current analysis.

*The link has nothing to do with Lost - I just like it.

Another question/observation - does anyone think there is any significance the fact the Others left tracks. Was it just to trap Sayid and Kate? I wouldn't think they need to. Was it just because they weren't traveling with the rain?

          This would be awesome.

If Sawyer doesn't get off the island because he wants to save Claire, how much more would that torture Jack in the future.

When Jack finds out Claire is his sister...
and especially when Kate admits doing some secret thing she promised Sawyer.

Guilty torment that could help Jack spiral out-of-control. Sawyer being the better man who still gets the girl and he's not even around.

"Next season is going to focus on Jack and the O6 seeking a way back to the Island (something will cause them to all want to). It will end with them finding a way back"

I don't think this will be the case....I think the last scene in the series is the first flash forward scene we saw....Kate meeting Jack at the airport and him saying they have to get back.

Other than that, I like your theories. I also agree that Sawyer stays to find Claire, after asking Kate to take care of whatever business of his she was attending to when Jack proposed to her.

OOOO! - my favorite moment of this episode was Sun's smack-down of Daddy Paik! Love it!

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station? ** Space-time rifts? duplicate people/alternate realities?; we'll see. Maybe whoever is in that coffin from last year's finale is also still alive on the island. Hmmm.

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six? ** I think the O6 cobbled it together.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say? ** The other Others - he told them they were going to the Orchid and to help out.

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside? ** Spooky factor. A not-so-subtle hint that he needs to go back to the island. Maybe the numbers are like a homing device.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know? ** I can't quite figure this one out.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why? ** Keamy & friends.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron? ** Doubtful. But I think this clears up why Jack does not initially want to see Aaron since he now knows that Claire is his half sister and Aaron is his nephew. And she is still on the island.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid? ** To the temple?

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries? ** He will distract them so Locke can 'move' the island. Beyond that I am not sure.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out? ** I like FDBryant3's theory above. I wonder who finds them after they get off the island. I'm guessing they don't pilot the freighter back to civilization, but who knows. Do they end up on another island somewhere or what?

With Claire not making it back to the beach or returning for Aaron he's got to think she's smoke chow unless we see something in the finale to show otherwise. He probably feels like he's to blame after all his promises to get everyone off the island. Now knowing that she was/is his half-sister it's got to be a punch in the gut every time he sees that kid of hers.

We will see if Jack gets some affirmative evidence one way or the other of Claire's 'status' during the 2hour finale. In any event, we can be sure that he feels guilty that she is either dead or still on the island.

Mediocre episode that bordered on entertaining. On to Mr. Watts' excellent questions:

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

As FDBryant said, it can make things go "boom." See also Keamy's "torch the island" alternative.

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

Oceanic and the six - a combo deal.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

Jacob, apparently. Fenry seemed to enjoy rubbing Locke's face in that one. He txt'd "is it okay if we come to the Orchid?"

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

Because he's cursed, or at least he thinks he's cursed. Combine that with the surprise party whispers and you've got the start of the spiraling circle down to crazyville.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

Almost as much as Fenry - it's a power play between Fenry & Widmore.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

Dharma/Widmore - that's part of the "torch the island/Keamy armband initiative."

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

Nope - she was just Christian's "Aussie port in the storm." The 'moment' we were supposed to take away from that was the enjoyment of watching Mr. Shepard 'act' - Jack realizing he had a sister, it was Claire, and then realizing he's and uncle. Lackluster.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

To the orchid/chopper/keamy/fenry/locke ultimate cage match. Kate, Sayid, Jack and Hugo will get on the chopper and fly away.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

Kill them, plain and simple. He has a bug-eyed plan, dontcha know.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

The helicopter makes it to the boat, at which point they either take the helicopter, a second zodiac, or some other escape pod and make it to the island where Michael sold the Others' boat. Or, they stop the C4 from detonating and everyone else is paid off to play dumb.

Lost in the Vines Prediction Contest Bonus Questions:
              108. Will anyone besides the Oceanic Six (and Frank) get off the Island in the season finale?

Yes. Desmond for sure. Daniel has a good shot - but his girlfriend red certainly isn't sitting in the catbird seat.

              Gzirra's Cheers:

              1. Sun giving papa the bird. Very entertaining.
              2. Hurley w/the Jesus weapon.
              3. Sawyer had some choice remarks
              4. Sayid handing his gun over to Mr. Alpert - Sayid knows when he's outgunned.

              Gzirra's Jeers

              1. Jackaholic - yep, just as I predicted, he leads a trek across the jungle with his day-old appendectomy to track down the helicopter that, for some unknown reason, he thinks Sayid is in. And he can keep up a faster pace with a split gut than "Kate-odile Dundee" the ultiimate tracker.
              2. Fenry. "Oh, John - I wasn't completely honest." Really? Seriously, that is played out. played. out.
              3. I thought we were supposed to see how the O6 made it off the island in this episode? Bordering on f.i.l.l.e.r.

Bit of a filler episode as we move the pieces into place for the endgame but that's fine by me. The writers have done a good job this season with showing us the outcome beforehand and then keeping us guessing as to how it comes about. I did like Jack getting the Claire bombshell dropped on him with Aaron right there in the room. That was nice. Also, anytime Sawyer goes soft for Hurley it's quality entertainment. Get a room already you two!

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

Having to take your own mother to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

Hmmm... It doesn't necessarily have to be Oceanic Airlines. They could be getting duped, too, if the O6 have a convincing story. I dunno. Pass.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

Dick Everlasting and his Jungle Hippie Commando Squad. I'm guessing Benry got a heads-up on the status of Keamy's crew at the Orchid. And, yeah, Richard is the man. He's always really quiet and reserved but he still seems very intense. Is he good? Is he bad? Can his piercing gaze see the dark contents of your heart and fire wicked-cool laser beams? Too soon to say.

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

Sometimes I wonder if this "curse" of his is something he brings on himself and not merely Island Hoojoo. He's always down on himself and I wonder if he's subconsciously punishing himself over something he did. Hurley is a big part of the Lost mystery and I say he's every bit as important to the island as Locke. Maybe moreso. I stand by my conclusion that he's altered reality a couple times already.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

I'm still not sold that Widmore really is behind this boat operation. People drop his name entirely too much. Isn't this supposed to be some top-secret @!$%# going on? Seems really odd to me.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

Keamy? I think he knows there's another way off that island... and he's ordered by whoever sent him not to leave any witnesses.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

I didn't get that vibe but... Mother's Intuition, maybe? Who knows? Pass.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

Out to get a delicious Orange Julius! The food court is on that side of the island.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

He going to be all like, "HI-YA!" and they'll be all like, "Nuh-uh!" and he'll be all like, "Wa-POW!" and they'll be all like "Oh, @!$%#!" and then he'll eat somebodies face off because he's an evil sonuva@!$%#. It's going to be awesome!

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

              No clue. Pass.

I've been thinking about my question above. They will go back to the island to pick up more survivors, but on the way back, Locke will do what needs to be done to move the island and there will be no trace of the other survivors. Or the bearings will be messed up and there will be no trace of the island. I can't wait until the finale!

You've stolen my theory. For whatever reason, the O6 are the first ones to reach safety, in whatever form that is, b/c it's obviously NOT the boat. When they try to go back, Locke has successfully moved the island and no survivors. That, IMO, is why they have to come up with the cover story. What else are they going to say???

Remember too that according to the "story", their were 8 survivors. We know that Jin is likely one of them since he is off the Island. Could the other be Michael? Desmond was never on the plane so he would not be considered part of the Oceanic story. I agree that the ship is doomed and will play into the finale in two weeks. We will be left with who is where and when!

I think the '8' will have nothing to do with who else actually survived. Sun told reporters as part of the official story that Jin never made it off the plane.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

I think this goes back to Ben and Widmore's meeting a few weeks back in Widmore's suite. Widmore told Ben something along the lines of "everything you have you stole from me" I am guessing the Island is "something". I would venture to say at one point the Island was under Widmore's control, maybe the first Dharma initiative until Ben took the island in a coup, and possibly relocated it. That would explain the mutual intimate knowledge of the island.

How much was the settlement with Oceanic if Sun could take the money and get controlling interest of her father's HUGE company.

Clearly, she wasn't paid in U.S. dollars. That sort of value won't even buy you controlling interest in Jorge's Taco Stand.

You think Hurley might have fronted her some additional cash, too?

We know that Ben seems to have access to quite a bit of money as well. I would say that the settlement is limitless since you could literally take money throughout time.

Only if Oceanic settled in cash.

Sun would have double what the other survivors got. She would have her share and Jin's.

She didn't buy the company in 2008 - the dollar was stronger back then.

here's a question -- why would Oceanic have to pay the survivors? They did nothing wrong. So IOW there is much more to this story. The money seems to be more of a payoff to shut up than anything else.

It could be hush money, but I don't think it's too big of a stretch to think that the airline would offer a huge settlement to six survivors of a devastating plane crash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean rather than get sued for negligence, etc.

McDonalds has to pay up when someone gets burned by hot coffee, so it's not a stretch that an airline pays when hundreds of people die.

I have a feeling the O6 got two payoffs: one publicized payoff from Oceanic for the crash and one under-the-table from the Dharma/Hanso/Widmore(?) for the cover-up.

We dont know a lot about Oceanic Airlines. They could be owned by Widmore industries. If this is the case then it really is a double pay off.

I am starting to think more and more that the Orchid Station definitely creates a time and place shift for the Island. It also leads me to believe that these displacements are never really "secure". These movements have resulted in the Polar Bears being on a tropical island and what I now believe from Season One was in fact a dinosaur that is slightly displaced in time that the humans cannot see but can in fact hear and feel its impact. Smokey may be the manifestation of the time shifting which results in the flashbacks, forwards, and in your face reminders of your life (Mr. Eko). I am enjoying the movement and direction the show is taking to reach its final destination in 2010.

um... I'm pretty sure there was no dinosaur on the island. those sounds are smokey plain and simple. And the polar bears werent lost in time they were brought to the island by Dharma, they already made that pretty clear. I'll give you the polar bear in Tunisia being lost in spacetime but the other two were just lost.

I think I have a theory of why only the 6 get off. I think that Jin and Sun, who are already on the boat, and the helicopter leaves with the other 4 and then the mission of moving the island is achieved and the 305 coordinate is no longer good and they can't find the island any longer to ferry more people. Then I think Desmond gets them into a little boat (Aaron wouldn't count as a 6th since Kate would be holding him) and they go to that island where we saw footage of them at the O6 press conference.
I think everyone else is alive, but trapped on the island with its new location.
It makes sense in my head, not sure if it makes sense written down though.

Again - Jin is not one of the six. Jin is dead ort maybe still on the island. How is still a good question. We know for a fact that Aaron DOES count as one of the six since there are only six people on the stage at the press conference including Aaron.

I, too, thought that the controlling interest thing was a stretch. That would have to be some settlement. But then again, if Oceanic is somehow in with the whole island thing, maybe they paid the 6 hush money.

I'm starting to worry that the only people who make it off the boat before it explodes are Sun and Aaron. Which would really suck, because that would mean than Desmond doesn't survive, and that would put a serious hit on my attachment to the show. Desmond is the man. Most of the first batch of people Daniel took off the island were expendable no names, so that bolsters the view that the boat does explode with at least some people aboard.

But, if Sun and Aaron are the only survivors on the boat, that means that Jin dies too, which would explain Sun's emotional state and desire to get back at her father. If she thought maybe Jin was still alive on the island, I don't think she would be quite as devastated.

It also occurs to me that the 6 and Ben are the only ones to leave the island and that everyone else does die, but because of the time travel element, Jack will be able to travel back to before everyone died and change some of his actions which may alter the future so he can get everyone off. Or somehow the 6 get caught off the island when the island moves so they really don't know the fate of the people left there. Just rambling now, thanks for the outlet.

Based on how shocked the O6 looks on the transport plane when they meet the press, I am thinking something really freaky-deaky happens in front of them. Like, the island (seemingly) disappears into thin air right in front of them. I think Sun would be devastated even if she did not know for certain Jin's fate. If the island disappears, then she would have no clue what happened to him, which would be just as devastating. Also, I'm not so sure that Ben leaves the island when the O6 does. I think he probably uses his time machine or portal or whatever to visit Sayid. Or maybe (and I am still clinging to this theory a little, but not so much as before) Ben was dead when he visited Sayid and Ben appeared to Sayid, just like Charlie did to Hurley and Christian did to Jack.

I like this theory. Maybe if Locke is the one who moved the island he is the other person that Sun considers repsonsible for Jin's death.

If the boat is blown up, wouldn't Michael survive somehow? The guy can not be killed. Guns suddenly don't work (via suicide attempt and murder). That would mean that Michael would be a 7th survivor. That would also bring into speculation that there are probably many survivors. Time will tell (no pun intended).
As for Hurly's awesome car.....In the future-he is driving it. That was the car that he drove during that police chase a few weeks back. I guess he got over the number thing.

why would the island disappearing mean Sun did not know Jin's fate? Is the idea here that he leaves the freighter and goes back to the island again?

Yeah. Maybe Jin tells Sun to get the heck off the boat since its got that big load of dynamite. They get separated, she gets on the chopper, he somehow gets back on the island and then it disappears right before her eyes.

Why is nothing ever mentioned about the bank robbery and murder of Kate's boyfriend from season 1? She went to trial for her step fathers murder, but why is the bank robbery and boyfriend murder never mentioned?

What was it she was trying to get out of the bank, do you recall? I think I remember it wasn't the money as her boyfriend believed. Was it the toy airplane? I remember that early on the toy airplane seemed significant and I wonder if we'll discover that Kate was one of those Chosen from early on in her youth, like Locke????

As for the robbery I'm sure its out there somewhere but the arson/murder happened first and it happened in a different state so there are probably jurisdictional issues at play. And its possible that the bank job is an unsolved crime since no one involved knew her as Kate Austin. They are probably still looking for whatever her fake name was at the time.

I am with Julie, there are probably more survivors, but since the Island has moved when coming to rescue them... Oops - sorry, we moved. No forwarding address. Sawyer, Juliet and some others are all sunbathing on the beach - not dead. I'm also guessing that the boat blows up. But how can a pregnant woman with a 5-6 week old baby survive in the water, unless there is some sort of raft or boat? Penny's real one? Anyway, you can't swim with a 5 week old baby in your arms. And I believe Claire is dead, how else could she accept leaving her baby?

"You're not supposed to raise him, Jack" --- Hmm. Sawyer is ? Or is the baby supposed to stay on the island... ?

I'm taking a guess that Keamy's armband is a remote detonator for the freighter's C4. The orchid might be a place where you can "leave" the island. He just wants to make sure he can do that first before taking his only "sure" way-out out of the water. I think the freighter might accidentally blow up when the others out Keamy. We'll surely find out in the finale. I just don't want Desmond to die... I'd surely like him to reunite with Penny. That would just be the icing on the cake... Unless Penny - who by the way is still looking for her true love, knowing that he's still out there and alive - finds the freighter (how? No idea), rescues some of the people on it (Sun, baby and Desmond) after or before the blow-up... and... and... to much guess work required to go any further.

It would make sense that Widmore would be with Dharma and that he'd have had control over the island before Benry took over and wiped all of Widmore's employees/scientists out. "Everything you have, you stole from me..."

Oh well... I guess I'll have to wait for the big 2 hour party. Just wish Penny would show up already.

PS : By the way, doesn't that baby drink milk? Who's feeding him? I would have thought that a young mother walking away in the jungle, leaving her baby behind (who she breastfeeds, of course) would cry his little heart out after only 2-3 hours. That one leaves me baffled. Maybe Sawyer gave him coconut milk!

That would just be the cherry on the cake...

That one leaves me baffled (my son is 2 years old and still can't go pass an hour after the scheduled time to eat before getting REALLY cranky). Maybe Sawyer gave him coconut milk!

                                                                          {"commentId":1807440,"threadId":"265178","contentId":"1489253","authorDomain":"annick1"}

Last night's episode was pretty good. Setup for plot-intensive episodes is an acceptable reason for filler episodes. I think it will be difficult to make a final judgement on this episode until we've seen the finale.

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

I think that the Orchid has misfired in the past, which is what caused the Island to split into Otherton (barracks side) and New Otherton (Aquarium/Polar bear side). The Orchid can move the island through time AND space, but it must be done very, very precisely or the island will break apart geospacially or temporally

I think it's less of a destroy the island problem as it is a, "Holy Crap we're stuck in a space/time that never existed and have shattered the time-space continuum, get your popcorn, the Apocalypse starts now!" problem. Keamy strikes me as the meat-head muscle of Team Widmore and probably doesn't realize the full implications of the "secondary protocol" which is probably why he was 'selected' for this mission. Keamy flashback starts Season 5, anyone?

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

Jack (possibly with Ben pulling some puppet strings). The others stuck to it because they're in shock, and no one would believe them if they told the truth. Probably because of the whole "We were rescued from a magical dissapearing island!" thing.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

                                                                            Alpert. "I can haz Chezburger?"

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

Dad took it out for a joyride before presenting the car.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

Both more and less than we think they do. I think Faraday probably knows the most about the island of anyone who's on the freighter, including Shifty Charlotte. He hides behind that sort of slow, nice-guy facade but I think he probably knows where all of the stations are, how to work them and what they were for, in keeping with the "Man of Science, Man of Faith" theme, Faraday scientifically knows the island, but has none of the "island wisdom" associated with John/Ben/Alpert. The Freighties tried to make up for this by sending Miles, which was obviously a confused move on the part of Team Widmore. I think they know a lot about the Island, but are far from knowing the Island.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

The Captain of Team Widmore. You can't be an evil mastermind without blowing up all the researchers that did your thinking for you.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

Yes, but no, but Yes. There is a connection with Aaron that she doesn't understand, and that she thinks right now is just because the baby was on the same flight, but somehow I don't think that we've seen the last of Momma Littleton.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

To get a Chezburger. And also to cause nastyness and mayhem for the mercs.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

"Alpert Haz Mai Chezburger!" "Killin' Me, Ur Doin It Wrong!" "Invisible Time Warp Death Machine!"

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

Lost in the Vines Prediction Contest Bonus Questions:

He seems to have had the lost-in-time malady that Desmond had or will get it or something. I think he survives the season finale somehow.

The scary guy who recruited everyone for the abduction of Ben mission recruited Miles to talk to dead people. That's where Miles gets his information.

I'm with the theory that Ben stole the island from Widmore which is why Widmore knows so much about the island.

Maybe it has something to do with the field that requires the certain bearing to be followed when entering/exiting the vicinity of the island. When you go off bearing, the results can be fatal, maybe that is the risk the run, if by moving the island they mean driving the island. Maybe the island "moves" the same way Ben does to get to the desert (while wearing a Dharma parka).

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

I think the story is part of a deal they make, maybe with Widmore.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

The Others. Maybe he warned them of the danger ahead, and that is why they abducted Jack, Sayid, and Kate.

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

a sign, he's not done with the island or his curse yet.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

I suspect they had a hand in making the "island" what it is today.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

I think it's either Ben's people, to destroy the boat, or maybe it is part of this "second protocol"

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

Yes. That scene was too creepy for her not to. After her coma, I assume someone in her family notified her of Clair's pregnancy.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

I thought those were more remnant of The Others.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

I have a feeling that it is either a a kamakaze mission, or he will bring back Smokey.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

They still have two hours in two weeks to get to that. I assume Locke stays behind, but sends Hurley to safety. Sayid, Jack, and Kate will make it back (or off the island by other means), Sun and Aaron will live, despite the fact that I think that ship is going BOOM soon. I don't think they are the only survivors though, I am sure that, like Michael, they will be called back to the island for the others.

                                                                                {"commentId":1807459,"threadId":"265178","contentId":"1489253","authorDomain":"Mars313"}

In a previous episode when the captain was going to shoot Keamy, Keamy showed him the device and told him he might want to think twice about killing him. Perhaps if Keamy dies, the boat automatically goes kaboom.

Also, does anyone else wonder what is going to happen to Juliette? Where has her story gone?

A pretty good episode, but as expected, it was almost all setup for the finale in two weeks. I guess I am going to have to accept the fact the Jin is probably really dead. The scene with Sun and her father is too much if Sun is still just playing along as thought Jin were dead. Plus he and Sun got on that Zodiac with 3 other red shirts. I can still dream, but it doesn't seem in character for Sun to act that way if Jin is not truly dead, or at least, she thinks he is truly dead. I am still holding out hope. Loved the Sayid and Nadia story line. A star crossed lovers tale almost as good as Desmond and Penny. Too bad we know what happens to them. I wonder if the writers are going to have a similar fate for Penny? I think I see Sayid stepping in to save the day for Penny once he learns who Ben is after. I don't think that Sayid would help Ben hunt down Penny and do to Desmond what happened to him. Now that we know that Jack knows about Claire being his sister it puts many of his other flash forwards into perspective. He was taking a shot at Kate with the "your not even related to him" line. It all makes Jack seem like a pretty big douche, but also a pretty sympathetic one considering the downward spiral he has set himself on.

                                                                                      Cheers

                                                                                      • So many Hurley moments: "Those are 15 years old you know.", "Who chose the theme for this party?", "You all look remarkably healthy"
                                                                                      • Sawyer following after Jack. I really like his character. Redemption is such a strong theme in this show. I like how Sawyer has apparently found it on the island, and knows it, yet took so long to accept it. He doesn't seem to be so overcome with the self loathing he suffered with earlier in the series. Yet it is still there to a degree.

                                                                                      Jeers

                                                                                      • Not much happened other than moving a few pieces around the chess board. Even the flash forward didn't answer too many questions that weren't already guessed at. It was nice to see how Jack learned about Claire and his father.

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

There may not be a lot of control to where, or when the island is moved to. I am thinking that the island actually physically moves, but that there isn't a whole lot of control over where you move it to.

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

                                                                                      The O6 themselves.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

Richard Alpert. I don't know how, but I think he knew that Kate and Sayid and Jack and Sawyer on on their way. He sent the others to get them so they don't come charging into the Orchid and get themselves, Locke, Hurley, and Ben all killed.

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

                                                                                      Charlie did it.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know?

Widmore knows as much about the island as Ben does, if not more. He shared with them as much as he needed to so they would know what Ben would do to try and stop them. They don't know a whole lot, more that the Losties, but not a ton. I think that they know what the Orchid station does, and how to use it. That is the secondary protocol.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?

Keamy. Also the secondary protocol. Secondary Protocol is for Keamy's team to get the Orchid, move the island to someplace Widmore can get to it and them blow up the freighter so that there is no one left to tell any stories. The thing on the boat that is broadcasting is connecting to the thing on Keamy's arm.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?

You bet. Too coincidental that Kate and Claire would have been both been about 6 months along when the got on Flight 815. I think she is wondering what really happened but doesn't want to come out and accuse anyone of anything.

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

                                                                                      Not sure, the Temple?

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

Wait till Locke starts to move the island, then, when all hell starts to break loose he is going to go Bruce Lee on their asses. He has done it before... or... he will do it again? Man time travel is confusing.

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

I have a theory but there are too many holes in it. Basically, after the Mercs are disposed of Locke refuses to move the island unless the Others let the Losties go. Jack, Hurley, Kate, and Sayid head to the chopper. Frank takes them to the freighter. Somehow, Keamy still blows the freighter and the 06 are the only ones that survive, as far as we know.

                                                                                      {"commentId":1807545,"threadId":"265178","contentId":"1489253","authorDomain":"dbstovall"}

If the reporter calculated that Kate was 6 months pregnant when they crashed based on Aaron's age, then is there some sort of time difference that hasn't been addressed?

But it still doesn't account for a two month disparity.

Last week I listed my idea and I'll post it again. Widmore is connected with DI. DI found the island and messed with it, so they know ALL about it.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why?
Ben and or Ben's people. They don't want anyone leaving the island without their permission

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron?
                                                                                          Not yet...

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?
A meeting place to discuss who gets to go home, what their story will be, etc.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?
                                                                                          Kill 'em

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?
Alpert and his people will gather them

Lost in the Vines Prediction Contest Bonus Questions:

What is the potential danger in using the Orchid station?

Unpredictability to the where/when? This made me think that maybe that's how the Black Rock ended up ship wrecked in the middle of the Island. Maybe the island "moved" and the ship happened to be at that location when the Island appeared under it?

Who made the fabricated story for the Oceanic Six?

I'm betting it turns out to be Ben! He explains that they have to lie to protect the Island and the survivors that remain behind, (Rose & her husband, Sawyer, ???) because once the Island is moved the game begins all over and if the Island is "rediscovered" then once again everyone on it is in peril.

Who was Ben communicating with using the lights? What did he say?

It was probably Richard and he was asking "Red Rover, Red Rover, Can Benry & Co. come over?"

Why did Hurley's car have the numbers inside?

The numbers are almost like a signaling device or a homing signal. Once you've been exposed to the Island they keep trying to signal you to come back (remember that Hurley originally got these numbers from another patient that had been exposed to the Island somehow?) But, like Locke, I think Hurley was one of the Chosen, destined to play a role in the Island's Future/past.

How do Widmore's people know so much about the Island? Exactly how much do they know? Widmore claims that Benry took the Island from him (and we know Widmore had the ships log from the Black Rock), and we suspect that Widmore was/is behind the DI, which is why he knows so much and has shared that information with those on his Team.

Who planted the C4 in the freighter, and why? I bet it was Keamy. And the thing on his arm was the detonator. My guess is that if the secondary protocol failed his instructions are to blow the freighter and eliminate all witnesses. Any mercs left alive on the Island wouldn't last that long between the Others, Ol' smokey, etc.

Does Claire's mother suspect anything with Aaron? I don't think she suspected anything, but Aaron probably resembled Claire as a baby and as Claire's Mom she responded to that instinctively?

Where are Alpert's people taking Kate and Sayid?

I think they'll end up at the Orchid to help Ben.

What is Ben's plan with the mercenaries?

He'll destroy them all. (They aren't the GOOD guys, Jack!)

How do the Oceanic Six all somehow get off the island when they're so spread out?

Richard brings Kate & Sayid to the Orchid when they go to save Benry, Jack and Sawyer won't be too far behind and that puts 4 of the 6 survivors together in the same place. The only remaining question is how Sun & Aaron ends up with them. Maybe when Daniel gets back with the next group, Jin forces her back to the Island. That puts the lifeboat back in play. They can only fit 6, so Sawyer opts to stay behind, Locke would stay anyway if he's alive, Jim may die on the freighter if it explodes OR he gets back to the Island and dies there, the Island "disappears" and the photo that was shown of them during the press conference was real and how they actually did get "rescued". But what happens to Desmond and Daniel?

                                                                                          Other points:

I think the sonar is jammed from the "test" bomb that Ben sent to Michael on the boat.

The payoff must have been pretty big for Sun to buy a controlling interest in her Father's company. If she's going to exact revenge on the Two men she holds responsible for Jin's death....who is the other?
Widmore? Could she end up "helping" Ben, similar to how Sayid is?

Ben's seeking revenge for Alex's death...we've kicked around why the "rules" were broken since she was kidnapped from Rousseau and wasn't Ben's biological daughter....but what if she WAS? Rousseau had to have already been pregnant before being shipwrecked on the Island. (or she would have died like all the other women did) so maybe Ben & Danielle were involved prior to her scientific vessel getting stranded (which I bet Ben knew would happen)

                                                                                          {"commentId":1807657,"threadId":"265178","contentId":"1489253","authorDomain":"mearth1961"}

I think they are going to get all the "extra"survivors onto the the ship before it blows up. That would clear the way for the producers to not have to worry about them wandering arouind the island anymore next season and getting in the way of of the plot.
