Those left on the Island shift seemingly randomly in time as the Oceanic Six start to formulate their plan to rescue the other survivors; but not everyone wants to join with the likes of Ben.
The remaining survivors start to feel the effects caused by the Island being moved, and Jack and Ben begin their quest to reunite the Oceanic 6 - along with Locke's body - in order to return to the Island.
Hurley and Sayid are on the run from the cops after stumbling into trouble at the safehouse; the island survivors come under attack by unknown forces; and an old friend offers some shocking advice to Kate in order to ensure that "the lie" remain a secret.
Note: "Lost in the Vines" is made for discussion of the series "Lost" on ABC. As such, here be spoilers! We talk frankly about the events of the night, speculate about future events, and so on. Read no further if you don't want spoilers.
The Big Reveal: The remaining survivors are bouncing in time; Locke was fated to die to save the Island; Hurley has turned himself in to police to avoid joining Ben and the other Oceanic Six.
An alarm clock wakes a sleeping couple. A nearby baby cries and the woman tells her husband that it's his turn. He reluctantly gets up, puts on a record, and feeds the baby. He stops the skipping record and goes outside to the bustling Others' village. We see that he's Dr. Marvin Candle, taping another Orientation film, this one for the Arrow. The Arrow is devoted to defensive strategies and intelligence against the Hostiles. But he's interrupted by a worker saying there's a problem at the Orchid station.
He hurriedly takes a van to the station, where a foreman tells him that all the drills melted, and that his operator "freaked out." He points out an open chamber with a wheel structure inside. Candle forbids the foreman from planting charges, because of the proximity to something that will let them manipulate time. The foreman jokes that they're going to kill Hitler, and Candle tells him that wouldn't work, as there are rules that can't be broken. Candle tells him not to drill any further because the energy could be released. The worker is loaded onto a stretcher. Candle, on his way out, bumps into a worker, revealed to be Daniel Faraday. The foreman scoffs at the time travel idea, and Daniel looks into the holes.
Locke lays in his coffin with Jack looking on. Ben brings in a table and tells him to close the coffin so they can put Locke in the van. He mentions picking up Hugo. Jack points out that he's locked in a mental institution, and Ben says that will make it easier than the rest of his friends. Jack doubts the other O6 are his friends, and questions how all this happened. Ben tells him that it happened because he left. He shuts the coffin.
Jack and Ben discuss what to do next, after they pick up Hurley, and Ben says they'll be collecting each of the Six. Jack doubts they'll be able to convince Kate, and then asks about the last time Ben saw Locke. Ben tells him about their meeting at the Orchid, and asks what Locke said to make Jack a believer. Jack tells him that he said Sawyer, Juliet, and everyone they left behind would die if he didn't come back. Ben asks if Locke told him what happened to the Island after it was moved. Jack says no, and Ben assumes they'll never know.
Three years earlier...
Ben turns the crank that moves the Island. Everyone in proximity hears and sees it happening. Afterward, it's raining on Locke, and the Others that were around him are gone. He calls for them but no one is around. Meanwhile, on the speedboat carrying Daniel Faraday, Neil Frogurt asks what happened. Daniel simply replies that they must have been inside the radius.
Sawyer and Juliet look around on the beach, pondering what just happened. Sawyer observes the freighter is gone, and points out that it was just giving out plumes of black smoke, so it didn't just sink. Juliet asks about the helicopter, and Sawyer tells her it was headed towards the boat. Bernard and Rose meet them on the beach. Sawyer assures them there's no need to panic, they just need to get back to camp. Bernard tells him they can't, there is no camp -- all the food and water is gone.
Daniel explains that it's not really gone. Charlotte embraces him, and he explains to her that his boat didn't make it to the freighter. Daniel asks to see something man-made, and Juliet offers a DHARMA hatch as a possibility. When Sawyer asks where the camp has gone, Daniel says it hasn't gone anywhere. It just hasn't been built yet.
Kate spends time with Aaron and hears the doorbell ring, and goes to answer it. A man from a lawfirm (Dan Norton) introduces himself and his colleague and asks for a moment of her time. He asks to come in but she refuses. Norton says that they're here to get a blood sample from her and her son. He says he has a court order from a judge to determine her relationship to the child. She asks who sent them, but he's not at liberty to divulge. She orders Norton off her property and threatens to come back with the sheriff. She slams the door on the men.
Kate quickly starts packing her clothes, stacks of money, and a gun. Aaron asks where she's going and she tells him they're going on vacation. She quickly grabs her things and walks out, telling him to say bye-bye to their house.
Sawyer and Juliet walk through the woods, and she asks why he jumped off the helicopter. He explains that he wanted to make sure she--they got back to the boat. Daniel passes quickly and says they need to pick up the pace. Sawyer demands Daniel's shirt in frustration, and the two get into an argument about how they need an explanation for what's happening. Daniel says it's too complicated and they don't have time, and Sawyer hits him. Charlotte intercedes, but Sawyer tells her to shut up.
Daniel relents and gives an explanation. He says to think of the Island as a record, but now, the record is skipping. Whatever Ben Linus did at the Orchid may have "dislodged" them from time. Juliet asks if they're moving through time, and he says either the Island is or they are, and it's likely they personally are. Daniel asks if everyone's accounted for, and Sawyer observes that Locke is missing.
Locke walks through the woods alone, looking for Others or survivors. A small plane narrowly misses him and crashes into a field, and he looks in the tall grass to find a Virgin Mary statue. He goes to check it closer and finds the drug-running plane stuck in the thicket. He climbs the trees up to it, but is stopped by being shot in the leg from an unseen assailant. Ethan Rom holds him at gunpoint and asks who he is.
Locke tries to explain to Ethan that he didn't come from the plane. Locke tries to prove he knows him by offering his name, and then introducing himself as John Locke. He says Ben Linus appointed him as the leader of the Others. Ethan claims that's ridiculous and is ready to shoot again when the light flashes, transporting Locke to the same spot, in the dark.
Sawyer asks Daniel where they are, and he replies that they're either in the past or in the future.
Sun places an unanswered phone call in an airport, and goes to a desk clerk to say she is traveling to Los Angeles. She offers her passport, and the attendant asks her to wait for just a moment. Security locks her up and as she calls for help, Charles Widmore tells her to save her breath. She asks why he brought her in. He replies that she needs to show him more respect, and asks what "common interests" they referred to. Sun replies: to kill Benjamin Linus.
Ben and Jack watch a news broadcast accusing Hurley of murdering someone outside the mental facility. Ben points out that this changes their plan.
Hurley and Sayid get fast food, talking about the assailant outside the mental facility. Hurley asks who it was that Sayid shot, and he replies that the man was armed and watching Hurley, which makes him an enemy. Hurley wonders if the man was going to kill him, and Sayid says he's not taking any chances after Locke died. Hurley asks why Sayid is so paranoid and he explains that he was working for Ben Linus. Hurley is confused and asks if he's on their side. Sayid advises him that if he ever runs into Ben Linus, whatever Ben tells him, do the opposite. Sayid notices a trap and pushes Hurley back, quickly dispatching one man off the hotel balcony and then fighting another. He grabs for a gun, but the man hits him with a tranquilizer. He fakes dead, then gets up when the man is close and forces him onto some knives.
Hurley picks up the gun of the fallen man and an observer snaps a picture and runs. Hurley runs in to get Sayid's help. Sayid, drugged, tells him to get to the car. Hurley remarks he thought this was supposed to be a safe house.
Daniel looks at the crater and asks if it was the hatch, and Daniel says that "when" they are now is after their ship crashed on the Island. Sawyer says if the camp is back he's going there and starts to leave. Daniel says they don't know when the next flash is coming so by the time they get back the camp could be gone. Sawyer and Juliet suggest warning the helicopter. Daniel says they can't change the past. Sawyer asks how he knows this, and Daniel says he spent his whole adult life studying space-time. He says this is why he's here. He knows what's happening. Sawyer asks how they can stop it, and Daniel says they can't stop it. Sawyer asks who can...
Locke is laying alone in the woods and limps up, still wounded. He goes to the plane, now on the ground, rusted and coated in cobwebs. He uses a belt as a tourniquet and lays still. A light comes from the distance from a torch. He draws his knife waiting, and then sees the visitor: Richard Alpert.
Locke asks what's happening. Richard says he's bleeding to death, and he needs to get the bullet out. Richard says Locke told him there was a bullet in his leg, then corrects himself to say he will tell him.
Richard explains that he didn't go anywhere, but Locke moved in time. Richard removes the bullet and gives medical advice, but Locke is eager for answers. He tells Locke the next time that Locke sees him, he won't recognize him. He gives Locke a compass to give back to him the next time they meet. Richard tells him that the only way to save the Island is to get his people back. He says those people are fine, and they're already home, but Locke has to get them back. Locke asks how he's going to do that. Richard tells him, he's going to have to die. Locke is transported again, into daytime, with the plane again high above in the canopy. He looks at his compass.
Juliet explains the purpose of the DHARMA station to Miles and Daniel. They flash again, and again are in daylight. The DHARMA crater is missing, and Juliet uncovers the hatch. She says the survivors must not have found it yet. Sawyer leaves and Miles asks where he's going; he says there's a backdoor and he's getting some supplies. Daniel says it's a bad idea: Desmond won't even know him, and how does he even know Desmond is the one in there? Sawyer pounds on the door and Daniel insists it won't work. If it didn't happen, it can't happen. Sawyer grabs Daniel and says he knows what he can't change.
The survivors head back to the beach, but Daniel sees Charlotte's nose bleeding. He looks concerned but she insists she's fine. He awkwardly agrees, and then tells her he left his pack back near the crater. She walks away and he goes to grab it. He opens his notebook looking concerned. Soon after, he pounds on the hatch's back door and is found by Desmond in a hazardous-material suit and holding a gun. Daniel explains to Desmond that the rules don't apply to him, that he's special. Desmond gets frustrated and holds the gun on Daniel. Faraday tells Desmond that if the copter makes it off the island and if he gets home, his name is Daniel Faraday, and all of them are in serious danger. He says Desmond is the only one who can help him, and he needs to go to Oxford and find his mother. He starts to tell Desmond her name, but he's cut off by another flash.
Desmond wakes up with a start and Penny asks if he's okay. He says that he was on the Island. She says he hasn't been on there for three years now, it was just a dream. Desmond says it wasn't a dream, it was a memory. He gets out of bed and onto the boat deck. He cranks the motor and says they're leaving. She asks where. Desmond replies: Oxford.

Frank walks in on the Oceanic Six discussing their cover story. Jack asks if they're all okay with it. Sayid says he's not taking it lightly. Kate agrees to go with the cover. Sun doesn't answer. Frank says he'll roll with it. Hurley objects on principle to lying. Jack says they need to protect the people left behind, and that Widmore won't just leave them alone. Penny agrees that there's no calling off her father. Hurley says the Island disappeared, and Jack says if he goes with that people will think he's crazy. Hurley remarks, not if they back him up. He appeals to Sayid that they should all tell the truth. Sayid says he doesn't want to spend his life lying, but he doesn't believe they have a better choice. Hurley says he'll remember this, and someday Sayid is going to need his help and he's not getting it.
Hurley drives a car with Sayid unconscious next to him. He tries shaking him to stir him but Sayid isn't waking. He buckles his belt awkwardly and crashes into some boxes. A cop flashes lights, and he shakes Sayid asking what he's supposed to do. He pulls over for the cop. Ana Lucia steps forward and asks why he pulled over. She chides him for it, asking what would happen if she had been real. She tells him not to get arrested, and to take Sayid to someone he trusts. He thanks her and she starts to leave, then turns back to say that Libby says "hi." When he looks again, the police car is gone.
On the beach, Bernard tries to make fire. Neil Frogurt yells at them, and Sawyer takes his shirt. He observes that the life raft is still with them, and Juliet says that whatever was with them when they moved is moving too. Daniel approaches the beach and excuses his absence with a story about being lost. Sawyer asks when the sky is going to light up again, and Daniel says he isn't sure. They can't just set sail, he needs time to do calculations to find out when in time they are. The survivors go off to find food and water.
Hurley tries to stir Sayid and takes some of his money. He puts sunglasses on him and walks into a convenience store. He finds a shirt that fits and the clerk asks if he had a rough night, and then says that his friend is pretty wasted. She says she knows him from somewhere, but he denies it. She says he won the lottery, and he says no, he just looks like him, then quickly leaves.
In the same gas station, Kate pulls in with Aaron. Aaron says he wants to go home, and she tells him to read his book. She checks her map and then gets out her cell phone. She almost calls Jack but hangs up, then receives another call. She answers and agrees to meet someone in Los Angeles. Aaron asks where they're going, and she tells him they're going to meet a friend.
Ben unscrews a vent and takes out a small package, packing it in his bag. Jack looks around his pants and Ben asks if he's looking for his pills. He tells Jack that he flushed them down the toilet. Jack thanks him, and asks if they're going somewhere. Ben says they're checking out, and Jack is going home. He says to pack anything he wants in a suitcase, because he's never coming back. Ben says he'll pick him up in six hours. Jack asks where he's going, and Ben says he needs to move Locke's casket somewhere safe. Jack asks: Locke is dead, isn't he? Ben doesn't answer, and just says he'll meet him in six hours.
Hurley's father (David Reyes) makes a sandwich and turns on the TV to watch "Expose." He hears a knock on the door and answers it, only to see Hurley carrying Sayid.
Hurley asks his father if he's seen the news, and David asks if he's wanted again. Hurley tries to explain the situation with Sayid and the tranquilizer, but David only gets confused about the threat Hurley refers to. When the police come, Hurley asks his father to lie for him. His father reluctantly agrees on the condition that he'll tell him the truth. David sees the men out and asks if Hurley really killed three people. Hurley explains that Sayid killed them, but it was only to protect him. David tries to convince him to take Sayid to a doctor, but Hurley refuses, claiming they'll be killed there. They clearly need a doctor, and Hurley realizes who to call.
Kate and Aaron ring the bell of a hotel room. Sun answers.
Ben walks into a deli and takes a number. A short-haired woman (Jill) says hello. He says that he has something in his van that he needs her to watch for him. She says if it's what she thinks it is, she will and that he'll be safe. She says everything's moving on schedule and Ben tells her that Jack is with them. Jill scoffs at Jack, but Ben tells her that he's under pressure and to give the man a break. Ben says to keep Locke safe or everything they're about to do won't matter at all.
Bernard finally makes a fire in the middle of the night, but it quickly goes out. Neil starts to argue with Bernard and Rose, then storms off. Charlotte goes to talk to Daniel and offers him a fruit. He thanks her and asks if she's okay. She says she can't shake her headache, and couldn't remember her mother's maiden name. Daniel says they're just under stress. Charlotte asks if he knows what's happening to her.
They're interrupted by Miles bringing a boar for food, saying he found it, it was dead in the jungle. He asks for a knife and Neil starts ranting again. Sawyer tries to calm him, but he refuses, yelling that they're all going to die and can't even start a fire. With that, he's struck with a fire arrow. Sawyer and the other survivors begin to run.
Everyone on the beach runs as fire arrows rain down and Neil is burned to death. When Juliet pauses to help someone, Sawyer goes back to convince her to run and they do together.
Hurley notices the police on stakeout. David asks if Hurley is crazy, and comments that it's either that or Hurley is lying to him. Hurley tells him he has a good reason to lie. Hurley's mother (Carmen Reyes) comes home, asking why a dead man is on the couch. Hurley tells her that Sayid isn't dead, but she tells him that he isn't breathing either. Carmen asks about Hurley's place on the news as David and Hurley put Sayid into a truck. Hurley promises his mother that it will all make sense soon. David drives past the police stakeout to escort Sayid.
Kate asks how long Sun is in town. Sun says just a few days, she has business, but she wanted to see Kate. She shows her a picture of her daughter and says it would be nice for her and Aaron to play together. Kate says she is fine. Sun asks, are you? Kate explains that someone knows they're lying. She says lawyers came to see her and asked for a blood sample. Sun asks who the lawyers represented and Kate tells she doesn't know. Sun says that means they're not interested in exposing the lie, because if they were, they would just do it. She says they just want Aaron. Sun says that she needs to "take care" of them. Kate asks what she means, and Sun asks if she'd do anything to keep Aaron. Kate asks what kind of a person she thinks she is.
Sun thinks back to Jin on the freighter. Sun remembers that Kate said she'd get Jin, but she did what she had to do, and if she hadn't they all would've died instead of just Jin. Kate tears up and says she's sorry. Sun says she doesn't blame her, and asks how Jack is.
David meets up with Jack, who assures him that he can be trusted. He takes Sayid's body as David explains what happened, and Jack says he needs to get Sayid to a hospital. David objects, but Jack says he has to do what's best for Sayid right now. David tells Jack that after all this is over, he needs to stay away from his son. After David leaves, Jack calls Ben and tells him that he has Sayid with him.
Hurley sits in his house with his mother. He insists that Sayid is a good person, but his mother claims good people don't kill anyone. Carmen asks why anyone would want to be after Hurley. He feigns ignorance, but she tells him that he should tell his mother the truth. With that, Hurley spills everything about the Island. He says the rest of the people who were on the plane are still alive on the Island. He starts to cry and his mother takes his hand and says she believes him. Hurley says that a lot of people died. Now, he feels responsible for the bad things happening on the Island.
Juliet and Sawyer walk through the woods and Sawyer gets something jammed in his foot. He pulls it out and the two quibble about his plan. They hear creeping and duck behind the bushes, seeing a pair of legs with a gun walking around. Juliet and Sawyer argue quietly, and they're suddenly both snatched and held by Others holding guns and machetes.
Jack starts administering emergency care to Sayid. Sayid suddenly wakes and starts choking Jack, and then stops when he realizes who it is. He asks what happened and Jack explains. Jack says Sayid was attacked, but Sayid simply asks where Hurley is. Sayid asks who is with him and Jack figures his mother is there. Sayid asks who else knows he's there.
Hurley is surprised by the presence of Ben, and tells him to get away. Ben says he knows Hurley is in trouble and he's taken care of it, and he can get him out of here. Hurley says Sayid warned him about Ben. Ben says he's taking him to Sayid, Jack is with Sayid right now. How else, he argues, would he know that? Hurley remarks that Jack and Sayid never trusted Ben. Ben affably agrees, but says they came around when they realized they all want to get back to the Island. He says if he comes with him, he'll never have to lie again. Hurley instead runs out to the police car, surrendering himself and asking to get him away from here. Ben glares at him from the house.
One of the Others asks what Sawyer and Juliet are doing here. He threatens to cut off her hands, and Sawyer says to wait and he'll tell them everything. They're about to cut off one hand when the men are knocked down. An Other comes after Juliet but he's stopped by a knife to the chest. Locke emerges from the woods and takes his knife out of the man. He greets the two and says nice to see them.
A woman writes on a board and then checks it against a computer that says "Event Window Determined." She walks up stairs to a cathedral, where Ben is lighting candles. She takes off her hood, and we see Ms. Hawking. Ben asks if she's had any luck, and she says yes. But she asks, has he? She gives him a 70 hour deadline. Ben objects, saying that's not long enough since he lost Hurley. He asks what will happen if he can't get them all to come back. She replies: God help us all.
