The motives of Locke are finally explained.
The Big Reveal: Jacob and Nemesis were twin brothers, but diverged as teens; Jacob was chosen as the protector of the Island "light," while Nemesis lived among people; Nemesis killed their "Mother," putting Jacob into a fit of rage that resulted in throwing his brother into the light and turning him into the Smoke Monster; "Adam and Eve" are Nemesis and his Mother.
A woman washes up on the beach. She slowly gets up, careful with her pregnant belly. She walks through the jungle and washes her face in a stream. An older woman appears and asks if she's hurt. She reaches out, offering to help. The pregnant woman takes her hand and they leave together.
At camp, the older woman asks her name. She says her name is Claudia. The older woman says, in English, that it's a lovely name. Claudia asks about the rest of her people, and the woman says it's only her, and she got here by accident. Claudia starts to ask how long she's been here, but the woman just tells her every question would lead to another question. Claudia gets up to look for her people, but the woman stops her, telling her she will find any others that came. Claudia starts to scream, and tells her it's coming.
Claudia pushes out a baby, and says his name is Jacob. The older woman takes the child and starts to care for it, but Claudia screams again. It will be twins, and the older woman observes that it's another boy. Claudia says she only picked one name. The woman lays the two children down. She says she's sorry, and murders Claudia.
A dark-haired boy finds a box on a beach. He takes it in to a clearing and lays down black stones. Young Jacob comes and asks what it is. The boy, Nemesis, says it's a game, and to play it. Jacob asks how to play, and the boy says he has to promise not to tell mother, because she'll take it away. The boy asks if he wants to play or not, and Jacob says yes.
Jacob enters the camp, and their mother asks where his brother is. He says that he's at the beach. Jacob offers to help sort threads, and mother asks what they were doing at the beach. He claims they were just walking. Mother asks if he loves her. He says yes, and she tells him to tell him what happened.
Mother finds Nemesis at the beach, and he says that Jacob told her what he found. She says Jacob doesn't know how to lie, he's not like him. She says he's special. Nemesis asks if he can keep the game, and she says that's why she left it for him. He wonders where it came from, and she says there is no where else, the Island is all there is. She asks where he came from, and she says that she came from her own mother. She says her mother is dead. He asks what dead is, and she tells him it's something he'll never have to worry about.
The two boys run through the jungle, hunting a boar. The boar is speared by someone else, and the two boys hide. THey see a group of hunters, and Jacob asks who they are. His brother quiets him as they watch from behind the thicket.
The two boys run to tell their mother about the men they saw. She asks if they saw them, and Nemesis tells her no. Jacob asks where they came from, and Mother says they're not like them. She says the boys are here for a reason. Jacob asks what reason, and she says it's not time yet. But Jacob presses. She blindfolds them and leads them away. Nemesis asks if she knew about the people, and Mother says she did, but didn't tell them about them, because they're trouble like all men. They come and fight and corrupt, and it always ends the same. Nemesis asks where they come from, and Mother tells him they're not to go looking for them. She says they'll hurt them, because that's what people do. Jacob asks, if they're people, can they hurt? Mother tells them she's made it so they can never hurt each other.
They come to a golden clearing, and Mother tells them it's the reason they're here. She tells them not to go inside. Nemesis asks what's inside, and she says it's the warmest, brightest light, and they have to make sure that no one ever finds it. Nemesis says it's beautiful, and she says that's why people want it. She says a little bit of the light is inside every man, but they want more. She says if the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere. She tells them she's protected this place, but she can't protect it forever. Nemesis asks, who will? She tells the boys it will have to be one of them.
The boys sit, playing their game. Jacob makes a move, and Nemesis says he can't do that, because it's against the rules. Jacob says he made up the rules. Nemesis tells him someday he'll make his own game and he can make his own rules. Nemesis sees Claudia, and she tells him it's alright. Jacob asks him what's wrong, but he just says he's going for a walk to the beach.
He follows Claudia out to a clearing. He asks why Jacob can't see her. She says it's because she's dead. She asks him to come with her, where he came from. She says it's across the Island, where he's never seen. He follows her to a small village. He asks who they are, and Claudia says they came 13 years ago, the day before he was born. She says their ship was wrecked, and it's how they came across the sea. Nemesis says there's nothing across the sea, but Claudia tells him that many things are there, and he came from there. Nemesis says that's not what his mother told him. Claudia tells him that the woman isn't his mother; she is.
In the middle of the night, Nemesis wakes Jacob and tells him to come with him. They walk through the dark, and Jacob asks why he has all of his things. Nemesis says they're leaving and never coming back. Nemesis says to follow him to the people. Jacob says no, but Nemesis tells him that Mother lied about everything. Jacob says she loves them, but Nemesis tells him that it was all a lie. Jacob shouts and jumps on Nemesis, punching him. Mother pulls him off, and Nemesis tells her that he knows the truth about the people across the sea. He says he's going to go there, to his mother. Mother protests, but Nemesis says she killed their mother. He urges Jacob to come with him, but Jacob refuses. Mother tells Nemesis that, whatever he's been told, he'll never be able to leave the Island. Nemesis says it's not true, and one day he'll prove it.
Jacob sits with Mother on the beach. He asks if Nemesis will come back, and she says no. He asks if it's true that she killed their real mother, and Mother says yes. She says if she had let her live, she would've taken him back to her people. She says she needed him to stay good. He asks if he is good. She says yes, but Jacob asks why she loves Nemesis more. She says she loves him in different ways. She begs him to stay with her, and he agrees. For a while.
As an adult, Jacob continues weaving his mother's tapestry. He asks what she thinks, and she says it's very nice. He asks if she's alright, but she says she's just tired. Jacob goes to the men's camp, and finds Nemesis there building.
They sit down to play a game, and talk about their Mother. Nemesis asks why he watches them. He says he watches because he wants to know if Mother is right about them. Nemesis says he means he wants to know if his people are bad. He says Mother may be insane but she's definitely right about that. Jacob says they don't seem so bad, but Nemesis says he's lived among them for 30 years. He says they're manipulative, untrustworthy, and selfish. Jacob asks why he's with them, and Nemesis calls them a means to an end. Jacob asks what end. Nemesis falls quiet, then tells his brother that he's leaving. He says he found a way off the Island. Jacob says that's impossible, there is no way off the Island. Nemesis throws a knife towards a well, and it sticks to the side. Jacob gets up and takes it. Nemesis says there are smart people, and they've found places all over the Island where metal behaves strangely. He says they've been digging at the sites, and found something. He tells Jacob to come with him. He asks what he's going to do when she dies, but Jacob says she can't die. He says he doesn't want to leave his home. Nemesis says, it's not his own home.
Jacob comes home, and Mother asks where he was. Jacob says she knows where he was. Mother asks what he said, and Jacob tells her Nemesis found a way off the Island. Mother goes to take a look at the people working at the dig site.
Inside, Nemesis tends to coals. Mother asks if she can join him, and he agrees. He asks how she is, and she says she's worried. He tells her she should be. He says he spent 30 years searching for the light, and he's never come close to finding it. He says what if the light underneath the Island is accessible from somewhere else. He says figuring it out took a long time. She asks if the people saw it too. He says yes, and they have interesting ideas of what to do with it. She says he has no idea what it means, and Nemesis says he has no idea because she wouldn't tell him. He digs out a stone, opening up a path to the light. It shines on a giant wheel, and Nemesis tells her it's to make an opening. He says he's going to attach the wheel to a system they're building that channels the water and light. He says when he turns it, he'll finally be able to leave this place. She asks how he knows it will work, and Nemesis tells her he's special. She tells him not to go. He says he has to, because he doesn't belong here. She says she supposes this is goodbye, and steps forward to hug him. He says goodbye. She says she's sorry, and smashes his head against the rock.
Mother wakes up Jacob, and tells him it's time. She leads him into the jungle, and she says she had to say goodbye to his brother. He asks, she's letting him go? She says she didn't have a choice, it's what he wants. When they make it to the clearing, she asks if he remembers what she showed him here. She tells him he's going to protect the light. He asks what's down there. She tells him it's life, death, rebirth, the heart of the Island. She tells him to promise her that whatever he does, he won't ever go down there. He asks if he would die, and she says it would be worse than dying.
She takes out a flask and pours Jacob some as she chants an incantation. She tells him to drink it, to accept the responsibility for protecting this place. He says he doesn't want to protect this place, and the two fight. He says she wanted Nemesis to protect it, but now he's all that she has. She tells him it was always supposed to be him, and she sees that now. She says one day he'll see it too, but until then, he doesn't really have a choice. He reluctantly takes the cup and drinks from it. She says now, they're the same.
Nemesis wakes up, finding the well he dug completely filled in. He turns to see plumes of smoke rising. He races to the camp and finds all of his people dead, and their village burned. He finds his game among the wreckage, and cries.
Jacob walks with his Mother, and observes that a storm is coming. She says there is, and he should go get firewood before it rains. He starts to leave and she tells him to be careful. He says he'll see her back at home.
Mother comes home to find her tapestry shredded, and the game burnt. She finds a white and black rock inside. Suddenly, she's stabbed through the chest from behind, and Nemesis holds the knife. Nemesis asks why she wouldn't let him leave, and she tells him it's because she loves him. She thanks him, and dies. He cries over her body, and Jacob comes home.
Jacob shouts, asking what he did, and knocks him over. He punches him over and over, and drags him out. Nemesis tells him that Mother killed the men, and burned them all. Nemesis says she made it so Jacob can't kill him. He says he's not going to kill him. He shows him the light. Nemesis asks why she showed it to him, and Jacob says now he has to protect it. He says if he wants to go to the light, and leave this place, then go. He knocks him out and lets him fall through the water into the light. The water changes color, and the Smoke Monster emerges.
Jacob finds Nemesis washed up against some rocks. He helps him back to the camp, and lays him down. Jacob finds the white and black stones next to his mother's body, and puts them in a pouch.
Just after the crash of Flight 815, Jack finds the pouch with the stones.
Jacob lays down the bodies next to each other, holding hands.
Kate asks who they are, and where they came from.
Jacob places the stones in their hands.
Locke asks who the men were. Jack tells him one of them was female. Locke calls them their own Adam and Eve.
Jacob says goodbye to his brother.
